If you’ve paid any attention to the news over the past year or so, you know there are a lot of issues surrounding the economy and employment. Ongoing supply chain issues, labor shortages, a looming recession… it can feel like a crazy time to look for a job. But the truth is that many skillsets are in high demand right now – it’s actually a great time to be looking for work.
Here’s what to expect as you enter the job market as 2023 approaches.
Job hunting has gone digital
Actually, it’s been that way for a while. But if you’ll be job hunting in the near future, know that the best place to find openings you qualify for are not only on the major job boards, but through sites like Facebook and LinkedIn as well. Be sure to sign up for customized alerts to know when a job matching your criteria comes up – that way, you can act quickly and secure an interview. And know that most job applications are now mobile-friendly, so you can easily apply on-the-go rather than waiting until you get home to your laptop or desktop computer.
Be prepared for video interviews
Even if the job you’re applying for will be on-site, it’s likely you might have a video interview before ever meeting anyone face-to-face. Practice beforehand, just like you would for an in-person interview, and ensure that your space is ready; get rid of any distractions and make everyone else in your home aware that you’ll be interviewing.
Get ready to negotiate
With some skills in short supply, job seekers like yourself have the leverage right now. That’s why it’s important for you to be prepared to negotiate for what you want out of your next phase of employment. Part of that is pay – think about what you’d like to make, and the lowest amount you’d be willing to take, and go from there. Most employers out there right now are willing to wiggle a bit on their salary offerings if you have the skills they’re looking for. And remember that money isn’t the only thing on the table. Feel free to negotiate over benefits, perks, and the nice-to-haves as well as salary.
